The Merry Times'  Statement of Purpose:

The Merry Times exists to provide the Canadian pagan community with a public forum for discussion, information-sharing, and learning. It is our goal to provide to  the community with a well written, well thought out electronic newsletter which discusses the many facets of pagan life, from the humorous to the serious, the Wiccan to the Ceremonial, the occult to the mundane, in an honest, non-confrontational manner. While we do not bar other cultural influences than Canadian upon the newsletter, we do encourage strongly that Canadians participate in their own unique ways.
.
Those who wish to submit to the Merry Times may do so via email to the Webmistress/ Editor (see the mailto link at the bottom of this page). The following guidelines apply to articles1 submitted to the Times:

  • The Merry Times offers First Serial Rights (we may publish the article, story, poem or review for the first time EVER, and the writer must wait three months from date of publication before again submitting the article to a magazine or webzine). All other rights belong to the author. Full rights revert to the author three months after original publication date.
  • The Merry Times may also reprint old articles provided that the submitting author holds the copyright to it and has permission to have it reprinted.
  • All submissions to The Merry Times will be in plain text format unless other arrangements are made with the Editor. Submissions will be edited for spelling, grammar, and content. Any editing done which encompasses more than simple spelling corrections will be returned to the author before final submission; the author may, if she wishes to at this point, choose not to publish the article rather than accept the changes made.
  • We will accept the following styles of articles: first person narrative, if well written; profiles or personality sketches; third person narratives; confession articles of a humorous nature; interviews; infornative articles including timely ones. Articles should be between 1500 and 6000 words in length.  Reviews should be 500 to 700 words in length.
  • Submissions will be judged by relevance to current topics, spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and quality of writing. The Editor holds final say over what will be published and what will not.
  • Authors published in The Merry Times will be offered a "text ad" at the bottom of their article for the website or pagan friendly merchant of their choice, as thanks for their submission.
  • How to get published: Choose a subject of compelling interest to the pagan community, and especially to Canadian pagans. Use colourful and entertaining material, such as a mix of anecdotes and facts. Avoid vulgar language or confrontational tones. There should be a strong element of reader identity, so that those who read know you are speaking to them. Writing should be clear, absorbing, and to the point. There should be a strong element of appeal: current events are more interesting than what happened to Joe Wiccan three years ago, unless it bears direct connection to something happening today. Timeliness: there must be interest in the material - an article on MayDay submitted right after the publication of a large Beltaine article will obviously not be looked at seriously. Read the newsletter - this is your best clue as to what's acceptable and what's not!
  • We repeat: SPELLING - GRAMMAR - PUNCTUATION - SENTENCE STRUCTURE are all very important!
Please note: E-mail submissions must be done in the following manner, or they will get "lost in the shuffle" and may not make it into the next issue!!
  • E-mail The Merry Times at sweetsystems@canada.com.
  • In the "subject" line, put the words "MT submissions". Nothing else can be on the line, or it will get "lost in the shuffle."
  • In the body, you may put in your article, or you can attach it as a file in ascii text format. Either is completely acceptable. Submissions in Word, Word Perfect, or other formats MAY not be accepted (it depends whether Allyson's editor will take them or not). Ascii (straight, normal, everday) text is best.
  • Please include your publishing name (ie if you want to put it in the magazine under your Craft name or pen name, as opposed to the one on your e-mail, you'll need to make that clear).
  • You will recieve an e-mail when your article has been accepted, telling you what the publication date will be, the next or later issue of The Merry Times.
1. These submission rules apply only to articles and reviews, original written pieces by our readership. These rules do not apply to event listings on the calendar.
